THE DEVIL and THE FOOL
Two Cards, Centuries of History and Layers You May Have Never Seen.
Two Sundays, two of Tarot’s most misunderstood cards. One deep dive into the history, symbolism, mythology, folklore, and hidden layers behind them.
You know The Fool.
You know The Devil.
How well do you actually know them?
What if some of the meanings you've been taught are only part of the story? What if the images themselves contain clues that become much more powerful when you understand the world that created them? What happens to your readings when you stop looking at
these cards as isolated definitions and start understanding the historical,
symbolic, mythological, and cultural layers that shaped them?
Welcome to the darker side of Tarot.
Over two Sundays, Björn Meuris takes you deep into The Fool and The Devil two cards that sit at fascinating points within Tarot's history and imagery. This isn't a quick card meaning workshop. It isn't
The Fool means new beginnings.
The Devil means temptation.
We're going much deeper.
WHAT ARE WE ACTUALLY LOOKING AT?
Tarot has a long and complicated history.
We can put a sentence about what you want to say about history or just move to here and you have to find out tarot history as well in the course. The imagery we recognize today developed over centuries, through different decks, artists, cultures, religious ideas, folklore, and systems of interpretation and that's where things get interesting because when you go back and look closely at the cards, you begin to notice things that can disappear beneath modern interpretations.
Details, symbols, historical references, strange figures, uncomfortable imagery.
Things that don't quite fit the meaning we've been handed and that's where Björn's research comes in.
THE FOOL
Is The Fool really about simply taking a leap of faith, or is there something much stranger happening?
We'll explore the history and evolution of the Fool, including how earlier depictions differ from the modern image many readers carry in their heads.
In the Tarot de Marseille tradition, the card is known as Le Mat, and its imagery differs significantly from the familiar Rider Waite Smith Fool. These are one of the many differences we will talk about in these classes.
We'll look at
- The evolution of the Fool's imagery
- Le Mat and earlier Tarot traditions
- The wandering figure
The animal
- Clothing and visual details
- The Fool's unusual position within the Major Arcana
- Historical ideas surrounding fools, outsiders, wanderers, and marginal figures
- Folklore and mythology surrounding the Fool archetype
- What later occult traditions added to the card
- What modern readers may overlook
- The darker and more uncomfortable side of the Fool
- How the Fool behaves when paired with other cards
Most importantly how does understanding the history change the way you READ the Fool?
THE DEVIL
What if The Devil isn't simply "addiction, temptation, and toxic attachment"?
The Devil is one of Tarot's most visually loaded cards and its history is fascinating. Different historical versions reveal details that can disappear when we're only looking at a modern reproduction. The Devil's imagery
has changed over time, and earlier Tarot examples contain visual elements that
invite questions about how the figure was constructed and understood again for
the class but we can drop a one-word hint about this. We'll go beneath the familiar interpretation and examine
- The historical development of The Devil
- The imagery of the Devil across different Tarot traditions
- Horns, wings, faces, eyes, claws, chains, and other visual details
- Religious and cultural ideas surrounding demons and devils
- Mythological and folkloric parallels
- The relationship between fear, desire, taboo, and power
- What later occult traditions contributed to the card
- The darker meanings readers sometimes avoid
- The difference between being controlled and choosing what controls you
- How The Devil changes when surrounded by different cards
- What happens when The Devil appears alongside The Fool
The Devil becomes much more interesting when you stop asking, what does this card mean? Start asking, What is this image actually showing me?
BJÖRN'S RESEARCH FINALLY BROUGHT TO THE TABLE
Björn Meuris isn't approaching these cards simply as a Tarot instructor. He's a Tarot researcher and practitioner who has spent years digging into historical sources, imagery, symbols, traditions, and the physical evidence surrounding Tarot.
This research has been developing for more than a decade. Along the way, he has traveled, examined historical material, explored decks firsthand, compared imagery, followed historical threads, and collected pieces of information that rarely make it into the standard card meaning conversation.
Now he's bringing that research together for this experience and he's opening the door to material he's been sitting on for years.
FROM HISTORY INTO YOUR READINGS
This isn't history for history's sake. The goal is to take what you discover and put it back into your readings because the more you understand the visual language of Tarot, the more possibilities you can see within a card. You'll explore how History → symbolism → mythology →
folklore → imagery → card combinations → interpretation can create a much
richer reading. Instead of memorizing another list of meanings, you'll begin
asking better questions.
Why is that symbol there?
Why is the figure positioned that way?
What changed between decks?
What did earlier readers actually see?
What happens when this card meets another card?
What changes when we read the shadow instead of the surface?
That's where Tarot starts becoming layered and you can actually use it in your readings to really give more in-depth answers and advice
